How Rich Are You Really?

cash globe3

Want to know where you rank as far as your annual income or salary? Many people just don’t realize how well off and blessed we are in the United States compared to many of the the world’s poor. Even if you were making the federal minimum wage of $5.15 an hour (which equates to about $10,712 annually) and is definitely not a livable wage, you would actually be the 789,723,668th richest person in the world. Not only that, you are richer than 86.84% of the entire world! Doesn’t that put some perspective to your money? A person making $40,000 a year would rank in the top 3.17% in the world! A person making $100,000 a year, which is possible in the U.S., would rank in the 0.66% in the world! That’s right, it’s in the top 2/3’s of a percent! How about you? Check it out!

  1. I don’t think so! This quickie calculator doesn’t account for wide variations in the covst of living.

An income of X can afford a person a higher standard of living in some places than an income of 2X in some other areas.

And of course, there’s no accounting for assets here. A childless adult earning minimum wage (and paying, say, half their income for rent) is considered “not poor” while a retired free-and-clear homeowner living on a modest retirement income can be “poor”.

Would anyone reading this rather be a “not poor” hamburger flipper than a “poor” retired free-and-clear homeowner?

  2. Yes, your cost of living here in the United States may be higher than many parts of the world, but your standard of living is also much higher. Would you rather live in a third world country with a lower standard of living just so you can have a lower cost of living? I don’t think so.

The fact is, we here in the United States are blessed. We don’t realize the things we take for granted in this country are not even available in some countries. Take running water, for example. Some people don’t have running water to take showers, or have a cold drink on a hot summer day.

So stop complaining about how the cost of living is too high here until you realize that you don’t have to use some hole in the ground as a toilet.

  3. Wow! This blog looks exactly like my old one! It’s on a completely different topic but it has pretty much the same page layout and design. Excellent choice of colors! eddgbaddcd
