Verse of the Day: God Expects You to Give Proportionally
- 0 Comments
16 “Each year every man in Israel must celebrate these three festivals: the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Harvest, and the Festival of Shelters. On each of these occasions, all men must appear before the LORD your God at the place he chooses, but they must not appear before the LORD without a gift for him. 17 All must give as they are able, according to the blessings given to them by the LORD your God.
Deuteronomy 16:16-17 (NLT)
From the Life Application Bible:
Three times a year every male was to make a journey to the sanctuary in the city that would be designated as Israel’s religious capital. At these festivals, each participant was encouraged to give what he could in proportion to what God had given him. God does not expect us to give more than we can, but we will be blessed when we give cheerfully. For some, 10 percent may be a burden. For most of us, that would be far too little. Look at what you have and then give in proportion to what you have been given.

These verses are not in regards to the tithe (10%), but were offerings above and beyond the tithe. The notes from the Life Application Bible make it sound like these are in regards to the tithe.
In regards to the law and giving, yes, we are free from the law, but it does not mean we ignore it. (See Romans) It’s hard to express in such few words…
