In observance of Good Friday, today’s Verse of the Day is going to be related to it. First, some background. Good Friday is observed on the Friday before Easter as a day to remember Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross of Calvary.

16 Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison. 17 And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head, 18 and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him. 20 And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.

21 Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross. 22 And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it. 24 And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.

Mark 15:16-24 (NKJV) See also Matthew 27:27-28:8; Luke 23:26-24:35; and John 19:16-20:30.

This is the day to remember what Jesus really went through for us. The pain and suffering that He went through was completely undeserved, but He chose to suffer so that we might live. Many Christians will go through this day with prayer and fasting. That’s good, but prayer and fasting should be a way of life, not just on a specific day. We should always remember the sacrifice that Jesus went through for us each and every day.

I’ll be watching my DVD copy of Passion of the Christ for a visual remembrance of the suffering of Jesus. I don’t think I could handle anymore than once a year for that movie. It’s always an emotional time to see my Lord and savior suffering but it’s a reminder of how much He loves us!

As we go through this weekend just be reminded of what Jesus willingly chose to do for us and also remember that the pain and suffering is not the end of the story!
